There are many different lens options available today; we can advise you which types would be best for your prescription and lifesytle. A few of the options you can choose are listed here:
- Materials:
- Glass - Glass is the first lens material invented. It has excellent optics, but it is fragile, heavy, and thick. However, it is very scratch resistant.
- Plastic - Plastic is slightly thinner than glass, but it is much lighter and less likely to shatter.
- Polycarbonate - Polycarbonate is a thinner, lighter lens material that is much more impact resistant than other lens materials. It is often used for patients with higher prescriptions, children, and in safety frames.
- High Index - High Index is a lens material that is very thin and light. It is the thinnest and lighest material available today.
- Lens Designs:
- Single Vision - Single vision glasses have only on prescription, and are designed for seeing at distance or near.
- Lined Bifocal - This lens has two different prescriptions, one designed for distance, and one for near.
- Lined Trifocal - This lens has three different prescriptions, one for distance, one for intermediate, and one for near.
- Progressive - This lens has several different prescriptions, allowing the user to see at many different distances. There is no line, so the lens looks the same as a single vision one.
- Extras:
- Anti-Reflective - This is a coating that is added to the front and back surfaces of the lens. It reduces glare from the computer or while driving. This coating also improves the appearance of the glasses because the lens is less visible.
- Transitions - These lenses darken when exposed to UV rays.
- Polarized - Polarized lenses have an internal filter that blocks out the glare that reflects off of surfaces like water, cars, or snow. An anti-reflective coating can be put on the back of the lens to further reduce glare.
- Tint - Tinting is available in several colors and darknesses. It can be used to improve the look of glasses or reduce glare. Sunglasses are made with a very dark tint, usually in grey, green, or brown.
